SCOPE
Wild boar harvest rates are increasing
significantly since decades over Europe indicating both
an increasing population size and a spreading geographic
distribution. Despite this clear diagnosis and despite
the fact of negative economic effects (in terms of
causing agricultural damages or spreading diseases like
Classical Swine Fever) there is still a considerable gab
in explaining this phenomenon. This hampers the
development of management strategies considerably.
One major difficulty in forming sound hypothesis is an obvious lack of
an European wide standardized and critical overview of wild boar related
information.
Thus it is planned to start an international research project between
2008 and 2011 named “Analysis of temporal and spatial development of
wild boar harvest in Europe” (initiative and funding by our Research
Institute for Forest Ecology and Forestry, Germany, willing to cooperate
with the other wild life research institutions). The workshop will be a
first step in this process.
